We fell in love with the Olde English/Anglican Bulldogge quite by accident. Several years ago I was looking for a dog that was suitable for protection purposes, but would also be a great companion. Since I had worked with professional shutzhund trainers before(German protection/training), I had worked a lot with German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobies and all the other popular breeds that are suitable for these purposes, I knew that I didn't want any of those. I ended up deciding that I wanted a American Bulldog, but they were very expensive back then for a nice one, so, to make a long story short, a friend of mine told me one of her coworkers had some Pitbull pups for sale and I should look at them. At this point, I was scared of Pits because of all the bad publicity they get, but I didn't think it would hurt to look. I got to meet the mom of the puppies and I was impressed that the family's little "foofoo dog" was in the box with the puppies and the mom didn't seem to mind, she was very friendly to me as well. The guy told me the father was actually a Staffordshire, which is the English equivalent to the American Pit, minus the "game(fighting)breeding". Staffys have been bred to be sweet loving dogs through the century, they actually call them Nanny Dogs in England, due to their sweet nature towards children, they actually used them as babysitters. I decided to try it and I chose a male, he's been my heart every since, so much so that I never want to be without a "Boo", so I decided to breed him so that I would always have a part of him in my life. While looking for a mate for my dog, I researched the different bulldog breeds over the years and discovered the Olde English Bulldogge and decided to go that route with my breeding endeavor, and bought a nice female to breed to Boo. I didn't want to breed back to a straight Staffy/Pit as I wanted to minimize the natural "triggers" and have puppies that were more laid back. While I wouldn't take a million dollars for Boo, owning a Staffy/Pit is a huge resonsibility. While studying the bulldog breeds, I found that so many of them are just "bastards" really. The AKC standardized breeds are all descendants of the Olde English Bulldogge. The influence of the terriers created the Staffy and the Pit Bull (terrier translates into terror, which is actually where the Pitbull gets its ferocity, not so much from the Bulldog influence), the Mastiff was used to create the Bull Mastiff and the American Bulldog, the English Bulldog was created by using selective breeding of the shortest, heaviest, wide-set offspring of the Olde English, with the most "bully" faces, and the list goes on. Every bully type breed is derived from the Olde English Bulldogge including the Boxer, Boston and Pugs to some extent. There are exceptions to this, but this is just a nutshell of the history of the Bulldog. Also, I chose the Olde English female because in recent efforts to "recreate" this breed, leading breeders have added the blood of the Staffy/pit, Mastiff and English to influence the breed in different ways in order to create the type bulldogs they like, as the Olde English Bulldogge had become virtually extinct. Personally, I like the true Olde English, and you can read more about this breed here;
Boo and Meg are two of the sweetest dogs I've ever had and I feel sure the puppies will be sweet, trusting, loyal protection/companion dogs that meet the "Leavitt" original type standard you can read about in the provided link. We love to talk about our bulldogges, please feel free to call or email us to "talk dogs".
